Mary Anderson, age 23, of Harvard, Mass., died from a gunshot wound to the head, according to Vermont State Police.
Anderson was originally reported missing when she did not return home from visiting friends in Hudson, N.H., on Sunday, July 17. Anderson's body was later found in the same vehicle she was last seen driving in Brattleboro, Vt.
After her body was found, authorities identified Anderson's former boyfriend, Matthew Davis, as a person of interest in her disappearance.
However, Davis was shot and killed by police in West Brattleboro Tuesday night after he lunged at officers with a knife. Officials determined he died from gunshot wounds to the torso and his death has also been ruled a homicide, Vermont State Police said.
Authorities are continuing the investigate Anderson's death to determine where she was killed and whether she was abducted, which was previously suspected by her family.
Her cellphone was recovered from the scene where Davis died and authorities plan to use it over the course of their investigation. Anyone with relevant information is asked to contact Vermont State Police at 802-722-4600 or provide an anonymous tip online.
Meanwhile, a GoFundMe was organized to help Anderson's family cover the cost of her funeral. The campaign had exceeded its $20,000 goal as of Friday.
